Quilting From Every Angle Blog Tour

Hello everyone,
From the moment I got my hands on Nancy Purvis' Quilting from Every Angle, I was mesmerized! Her book is filled with 16 unique quilt patterns in easy to advance skill levels, making it a perfect companion for growing quilters. This book inspired me tremendously, I already have a list of quilts that I want to make from it. Nancy did a great job providing tips and ideas for designing quilts. My favorite tip is her Color Tips and Tricks, where she explained the importance of color and fabric choosing when designing a quilt, making a note on fashion trends and what colors people are wearing? Now that's a great and unique way to gather inspiration for a quilt design.  And can I please say, what an honor is to have my inspirational pin board featured in your book?

It was so hard choosing a quilt for this blog tour - I love all of them- but I managed to contain my self and picked the Kaleidoscope Mini Quilt..which is adorable!  Nancy cleverly colored this quilt using the basic colors of the color wheel, so I decided to make a colorful impression as well with my latest collection, Dare.

Isn't gorgeous? I loved making it, and her "My Method: Paper Piecing" is the best, super easy and helpful for this mini quilt. This book has so many adorable quilts and make sure to follow Nancy's blog for the book's updates.
The blog tour is not over yet so make sure to check the upcoming posts on the schedule below.

Daring Reflection Quilt Tutorial

Finished size 78'' by 60''

Materials
1¼  yards of PE-454
1¼  yards of PE-408
2 ½ of assorted Dare fabrics print
Biding
3/₈ of a PE-408
Backing
3 yards of DAR-54301

Cutting Instructions
Ninety (90) 4'' by 4'' squares of PE-454
Ninety (90) 4'' by 4'' squares of PE-408
One-hundred and eighty (180) 4'' by 4'' squares of  assorted Dare Fabrics

Construction
*All HST are constructed the same way. The fabric combinations (Dare Fabrics) are open to your personal selection. The main picture is only a suggestion, so have fun combining prints
*1/4 seam allowance for everything

Step 1
Take the Ninety (90) 4'' by 4'' squares of PE-454 and cut in in half so you can have a half square triangle (one square will give you two triangles), repeat this step for all the 90 squares, leaving you with a grand total of 180 triangles.

Take the Ninety (90) 4'' by 4'' squares of PE-408 and cut in in half so you can have a half square triangle (one square will give you two triangles), repeat this step for all the 90 squares, leaving you with a grand total of 180 triangles

Take the One-hundred and eighty (180) 4'' by 4'' squares of  assorted Dare Fabrics and cut in in half so you can have a half square triangle (one square will give you two triangles), repeat this step for all the 180 squares leaving you with a grand total of 360 triangles . For the purpose of this tutorial, the color for Dare fabrics will be pink.

Step 2
Start creating your HST as instructed in the diagram. Take one triangle from PE-454 and one triangle from assorted Dare fabrics and attach them together. Repeat this step with all the 180 triangles from PE-454 and 180 triangles from assorted prints.

Take one triangle from PE-405 and one triangle from assorted Dare fabrics and attach them together. Repeat this step with all the 180 triangles from PE-405 and 180 triangles from assorted prints.

Once all of your HST are attached you will have a grand total of 180 HST with PE-454 and 180 HST with PE-408.

Step 3
Now it's time to start connecting them all together as instructed in the image below. For your convenience, we are going to name each row alphabetically, and begin connecting them by row.

You will end up with a quilt top looking like this. Later, turn the quilt in a 45° angle.

Lastly trim it to end up with a 78 x 60" quilt top.

Quilt Assembly

Place BACKING FABRIC on a large surface wrong side up. Stretch it with masking tape against that surface.
Place BATTING on top of backing fabric.
Place TOP on top of the batting with right side facing up. Smooth away wrinkles using your hands.
Pin all layers together and baste with basting thread, using long stitches. You can also use safety pins to join the layers.
Machine or hand quilt starting at the center and work-ing towards the corners. Remember that quilting motifs are a matter of personal preference. Have fun choosing yours!
After you finished, trim excess of any fabric or batting, squaring the quilt to proceed to bind it.

Binding
Cut enough strips 1½" wide by the width of the fabric I to make a final strip 280" long. Start sewing the binding strip in the middle of one of the sides of the quilt, placing the strip right side down and leaving an approximated 5" tail. Sew with ¼" seam allowance (using straight stitch), aligning the strip’s raw edge with the quilt top’s raw edge.
Stop stitching ¼" before the edge of the quilt (DIA-GRAM B 1). Clip the threads. Remove the quilt from under the machine presser foot. Fold the strip in a motion of 45° and upward, pressing with your fingers (DIAGRAM B2). Hold this fold with your finger, bring the strip down in line with the next edge, making a horizontal fold that aligns with the top edge of the quilt (DIAGRAM B3). Start sewing at ¼" of the bor-der, stitching all the layers. Do the same in the four corners of the quilt.

Stop stitching before you reach the last 5 or 6 inches. Cut the threads and remove the quilt from under the machine presser foot. Lay the loose ends of the binding flat along the quilt edge, folding the ends back on themselves where they meet. Press them together to form a crease. Using this crease as the stitching line, sew the two open ends of the binding with right sides together (you can help yourself marking with a pencil if the crease is difficult to see).
Trim seam to ¼" and press open. Complete the sewing. Turn binding to back of the quilt, turn raw edge inside and stitch by hand using blind stitch

Voila! You have completed  the Daring Reflection Quilt!

The Wedge Pillow Case

Sewing time everybody!

Here is another pillow case tutorial, this one being favorite. It is so simple and easy to make it will only take you one hour and a half! I literally made this pillow case two days prior to market ☺ and I received so many compliments on it that I couldn't resist share the steps with all of you! Have fun sewing☺

What you'll need:
Matching Thread
2/3 of batting
2/3 yards of PE-420
1/4 yard of PE-436
1/8 yard of PE-454
Fat Quarter of DAR-54300
Fat Eight of DAR- 54304
Fat Eight of DAR- 64311
Fat Eight of DAR- 64305
Fat Eight of DAR- 54306

Cutting Instructions
*WOF (Width of the fabric)
*Download the ABCDE Patterns in an 8.5 by 11 card-stock paper
PE-420 Cut two (2) 20'' by 20''
Batting Cut two (2) 20'' by 20''
PE - 436 Cut four (4) 1'' by WOF
PE - 454 Cut two (2) 1'' by WOF
DAR-54304 cut PATTERN A
DAR-54300 cut PATTERN B1, B2, B3
DAR-64311 cut PATTERN C1, C2
DAR-64305 cut PATTERN D1, D2
DAR-54306 cut PATTERN E1, E2

Step 1

Start by creating the strip connectors. Grab the four (4) 1'' by WOF of PE-436 and the two (2) 1'' by WOF by PE- 454 and connect them (with 1/4 seam allowance) in the order below. That way you will end up with two strips measuring 2'' by WOF

Later start cutting the strips as instructed in the diagram 2. For the Wedge pillow case, you will need four strip connectors.

Step 2

This part is a bit tricky but fun, lets start laying out our pillow case design with our DAR-54304,54300, 64311, 64305 and 54306 pieces already cut from the downloadable ABCDE patterns.
The order of the placements is explained in the image below, taking into consideration that the black strips are our connector strips just completed in step 1

So lets begin! Take piece A, C and strip connector measuring 2'' by 9.5''  and attach them as the image below explains. Remember, always using a 1/4 seam allowance.

Once the three pieces are attached, continue by adding the 2'' by 24'' strip connector.

Now take piece B and attached it with the rest of the connected pieces.

You will notice some extra fabric from the connectors, trim it and start attaching the 2'' by 18'' connector.

Almost there, only a few steps to finish the pillow top. Now take piece D and attache it the just sewn connector and trim extras.

Now it's time to attach our last connector 2'' by 19''  to our almost complete piece! Yeiii!

Don't forget to trim the extra fabric from the recently attached connector. Lastly take piece E and sew it as explained in the image below. And there you have it! your pillow top is now complete!

Take the 20'' by 20'' squares of batting and place the finish pillow on top of it. Now it's quilting time. In this case, I decided to go around each piece except the edges. Pin pillow case in place and start quilting with an 1/8 seam allowance as explained below.

Step 3

Take the two (2) 20'' by 20'' squares from PE- 420  fold the edges under by 7 inches and iron press, so  they will not unravel over time.  After this, if desire, straight stitch the folded edge.

Step 4

Start by laying the front piece of the pillow with the right side (ABCDE pieces) facing up and place the back panels on top with right side facing down. Pin all the pieces together and sew around with an 1/4 inch seam allowance.

And voila! Your Wedge pillow case is complete, I hope you all enjoyed this tutorial as much as I enjoyed making it!

Happy sewing everyone!

Tectonic Pillow

Fabric Requirements
Fabric A-DAR-64304- 1/2 yd.
Fabric B-DAR-64311- 1/4 yd.
Fabric C- Linen- 1/2 yd.
Backing-PE- 454- 1/2 yd.

Additional Materials
Batting
Polyfill
Quilting thread-
Aurifil- Medium Mint #2835

Cutting Directions
One (1) Pattern 1 from Fabric A
One (1) Pattern 4 from Fabric B
One (1) Pattern 2,3,and 5 from Fabric C

Step 1- Drafting the Pattern

On a large sheet of pattern making paper, draw a 15” x 25” rectangle.
Take a ruler and draft the following lines following Diagram 1. Label each
piece, you will have a total of five pattern pieces. Cut pieces out on the lines drafted. Follow cutting directions provided above.

Step 2- Sewing the Pattern

Sew pattern piece 1 and 2 with right sides together following Diagram 2.

Sew pattern 3 to the piece made in Diagram 2. (Diagram 3)

Sew pattern piece 4 to the piece made in Diagram 3. (Diagram 4)

Sew pattern piece 5 to the piece made in Diagram 4. (Diagram 5)

You should now have a rectangle that looks like Diagram 6.

Step 3- Quilting

Cut out a piece of batting a few inches bigger then your rectangle. Quilt as desired. I used Aurifil’s  medium mint #2835   thread. I decided to echo the pattern pieces in my pillow
making triangles and adding a few horizontal and vertical lines here and there  at 1/4” and 1/2” spaces.  Square off piece.

Step 4- Creating the Backing

After squaring off your piece measure the height of your pillow. Cut out two rectangles at the height and at 20” length.

Place backing and the front of your pillow right sides together fold raw edges over. Repeat this step with the other backing piece. Make fold big enough where the two
backing pieces will overlap about 3” . (Diagram 8.1 and 8.2) Sew together backing and front pillow at 1/2” seam allowance.  Flip right side of pillow through the opening in
the backing.
